Cynthia Carr will read from Candy Darling: Dreamer, Icon, Superstar, followed by a discussion with Cynthia Carr & Agosto Machado.




Cynthia Carr is the author of Fire in the Belly: The Life and Times of David Wojnarowicz, winner of a Lambda Literary Award and a finalist for the J. Anthony Lukas Book Prize. Her previous books are Our Town: A Heartland Lynching, a Haunted Town, and the Hidden History of White America and On Edge: Performance at the End of the Twentieth Century.





Agosto Machado is a Chinese-Spanish-Filipino activist and visual and performing artist who lives and works in New York City. He presented his first solo exhibition, Agosto Machado: The Forbidden City, in 2022 at Gordon Robichaux in New York with critical acclaim in The New York Times and Artforum. One of Machado’s shrine works in the exhibition was acquired by The Museum of Modern Art in New York and is currently on view in the museum’s permanent collection gallery. Later this year, a profile on the artist’s life and work will appear in the magazine Apartamento.

Over the course of six decades, Machado has performed at countless theaters, galleries, clubs, lofts, and underground venues including WPA, La MaMa ETC, Anderson Theater, Theater of the Lost Continent, Theatre for the New City at Westbeth, Batianos Theatre, Theatre Genesis, Judson Memorial Church, The Night House Theater, Truck and Warehouse Theatre, P.S. 122, Performing Garage, The National Arts Club, Dixon Place, New York Public Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center, 8BC, Gene Frankel Theatre, Club Chandelier, LBGT Community Center, King Tut's Wah Wah Hut, Club 57, The Mudd Club, S.N.A.F.U., The Pyramid Club, P.P.O.W. Gallery, Howl Gallery, and Participant Inc.
